A rock consisting largely of the mineral
olivine; pyroxene and other minerals may also
be present. Peridotite is an ultrabasic rock
containing less than 45% silica by weight. It
is believed to be one of the rock types
making up the Earth's upper mantle, and is
sometimes brought from the depths to the
surface by major movements, or as inclusions
in lavas.
